Break the Chain Storm Affronts

Created 9/20/2005 (9/20/2005) On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina became one of the worst natural disasters on American soil in the country's history. The storm was carrying 145 mile-per-hour winds when it hit the Gulf Coast, leaving massive destruction in its path, laying waste to American icons such as New Orleans, Louisiana and claiming nearly 1,000 lives. Millions are forced from their homes - many to other states to start over, most just to wait until they can return to what was once their homes.

In the wake of this terrible storm was another storm - a storm of e-mail chain letters. The online rumor mill is churning them out by the dozens and, in a realm where text from somebody's weblog and the latest story from the Washington Post look nearly identical, it is very difficult to tell fact from fiction.

Katrina-related chains run the gamut. Some chains try to place blame for the breadth of destruction and the apparent lack of preparation. They accuse the Bush Administration of reacting slowly and hoarding needed resources half-a-globe away in Iraq. Others point the finger at what they feel were corrupt and inept state and local governments. Still others try to incite outrage with unbelievable accounts of refugees taking advantage and often shunning the help offered them. And a few criticize the efforts of major relief organizations, such as the Salvation Army and American Red Cross.

The chains are most frequently third-person accounts of something a friend or relative told them. Others are first-person accounts with no identified author or intended audience. Some are rumor, some are opinion and a few are based on fact. Nonetheless, tracking each to its source and determining its validity is an odious task at best.

To make my job easier, I have created a special temporary forum in the Chain-Breaker's Library for folks to submit and track the multitude of Katrina rumors. Please review the forum, offer your input and maybe help research some of these chain letters.
